First weekend of September and it’s the warmest weekend of the year … Summer hasn’t quite given up so we are enjoying it for as long as it lasts. And for this weekends recommendations we’ve again gone to Germany, but not for a Riesling this time. We’ve gone for the other grape - Sylvaner. The Juliusspital Foundation is large - with around 180 hectares of vineyards, it is actually the second largest wine estate in Germany. The Juliusspital vineyards are spread across more than 100 km and the whole of Franconia. The vines are planted on the Franconian Triassic - a three-part rock formation made of red sandstone, shell limestone and keuper – which is unique in all the wine-growing regions. The wines with VDP Erste Lage means that these vineyards are first-class vineyards with distinctive characteristics. They provide optimal growing conditions, as evidenced over a long period of time. They are planted with traditional varieties, as determined by each region. This weeks wine is one of these with the grape Sylvaner. The Silvaner grape is espesially important to Juliusspital. They show it in all its facets. Juicy, fresh and uncomplicated, dry and very well balanced in acidity, dense, structured and really gripping on the palate. With a total of 40% Silvaner - they are the largest Silvaner wine estate in the world. Tasting notes:Juliusspital Würzburger Abstleite Silvaner trocken Erste Lage 2023 - 229,90 kr Intense, juicy pear flavours on the nose, with hints of pineapple and subtle spicy nuances in the background. On the palate, the flavours are more subtle with refreshing citrus nuances. The wine is very well-balanced, with well-integrated acidity and exciting minerality. An appealing Silvaner! Try it with white fish and a rich and creamy sauce.
