It’s February and we are in the middle of what is probably the best fishing season of the year, Skrei season! This delicate and tasty cod is in my opinion the best fish in the world. And now it is at it’s best, but what wine do you pair it with? As always it depends on how you prepare it. Back in the day it was common to use red wine with, but that was mostly because there was more red wines available in Norway than white. For me Skrei is perfect with a well made chardonnay. Usually I would go to France and Burgundy for my choice, but this week I’m going with a wine made from friends from the other side of the world. I’m going with a wine made from friends from the other side of the world. Our last trip before the pandemic was to Argentina where we visited the Cantena Zapata winery among others. Cantena has a wide range of good quality wines in Norway, ranging from affordable, The Alamos Wines, to rather expensive wines around 1000,- NOK to this week's wine that sits comfortably in the middle. The Cantena Alta Historic Rows comes with both Chardonnay and Malbec and it’s the Chardonnay we are drinking with the Skrei. At almost 1500 meters elevation in the Andean foothills, the Adrianna vineyard's calcareous soils and cool climate are the promised land of Chardonnay. The fruit from the Adrianna vineyard has a purity of flavors and a minerality that is particular to this vineyard and can not be found anywhere else in Mendoza. The nearby, gravel-covered Domingo Vineyard makes up 20% of the blend. Tasting notes:Catena Alta Chardonnay 2019 - 285,- kr Beautiful golden hue. Citrus, almond, vanilla and a hint of peach on the nose. Lean and crisp in the mouth. Grapefruit, lemon, butter and almond in the mouth. IT sits perfectly in the mouth and is a joy to drink. A superb wine. This is perfect with white fish, gently fried in butter with a rich sauce.
