A few years back we travelled around the mountainous region of Savoie, east in France. Situated just east of Lyon, bordering Italy and Switzerland, we were amazed from the wines we tasted. Especially white ones caught our attention. Being the only alpine wine region in France, they produce grapes rarely seen elsewhere.  Jacquère, Roussanne, Rousette and Gringet for whites, and Mondeuse for reds. It's still a wine region mostly unknown to people, and therefore you can get excellent quality at a good price.

A few weeks back I came across our pick of the week by chance. It's a fabulous wine made from 100% Rousette grapes, also known as Altesse - to make things even more complicated :)
Grapes are sourced from a steep hillside named Marestel. The inclining reaches up to 45 degrees, and makes the production very limited. Only 0,75 hectare is farmable. Grapes from this unique site produces a distinctly different sort of Rousette, more intense and very suitable for cellaring. The current vintage at Vinmonopolet is 2020. It drinks very well now, but you could easily let it rest in your cellar for another 8-10 years.

Tasting Notes

Chevallier Bernard Rousette de Savoie Marestel 2020 - 315kr

Golden light yellow.
Lovely aromas of ripe yellow fruits, salty sea, honey and warm spices.
Delicate and big in the mouth with yellow fruits and salt rocks. Good intensity in the fruit, nice acidity, complex and long.
A great wine.

With food
Rich, good acidity and nice fruit makes this a very versatile wine for pairing with food. You could do white fish in rich buttery sauces, scallops fried in the pan, foie gras, pork cutlets in sauce or pulled pork burgers.
