Some of you might have noticed that we have gone a bit mad about anything Greek here at our blog. And it’s true, we do love this wonderful country. We have always been very fond of it actually, especially the classical literature, philosophy, myth and history, but lately we have also found the wines from there. Now the Greeks have been making wine since time immemorial, but it’s just lately that we here in Norway have been introduced to the great quality wines from the great country, and how we are now reaping the rewards! We have had both red-, white- and rosé-wines on the blog but this week we are recommending an orange wine. Most of you will know the renaissance the orange wines have been through these last couple of years, especially coming from eastern countries. This weeks wine comes from the Mylenas Brothers who are situated in historical Attica. The vineyard of Attica dominates as the oldest and most historical vineyard in Greece. Attica is in reality a large peninsula with natural borders the Geraneia range and the mountains of Kithairon, Parnitha and Penteli, receiving at the same time the beneficial sea breeze as its whole southern part is embraced by the sea. All of these elements combined with the diversity of its subsoil in terms of composition and of course its warm, dry climate near the mountains make the vineyard of Attica one of the most important vineyards in Greece. The grape variation is Savatiano and it is at the heart of the vineyard of Attica, a variety that the residents of Attica have intertwined their lives with. Also a variety that has been identified with the oldest and most traditional wine worldwide, retsina (resinated wine). The grape’s resistance to drought in addition to its ability to adapt as easily as a chameleon to different soil conditions make it one of the most popular varieties not only in the vineyard of Attica, but in whole central Greece. Despite its high popularity it was set aside for several years. Recently though, thanks to the new generation of winemakers, with the use of scientific knowledge, research, modern vineyard management techniques and vinification methods, it came back to the fore giving a new dimension to the dynamics of winemaking, not only regarding the organoleptic characteristics but also the aging in the cellar. This weeks wine is the Single vineyard Mylonas Naked Truth. The grapes are hand-picked and placed in to small crates. After the harvest, the grapes are taken immediately into the winery. Cooling at 8 °C, destemming and spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with 20 days on the skins at controlled temperature (18°C). After fermentation the wine is left on the lees for 6 months with frequent stirring.Unfined and bottled only with a very small addition of sulfites. Tasting notes:Mylonas Naked Truth 2021 - 196,90 kr On the nose it has a complex aromatic character. Fragrant, with peach skin, honey and floral notes. In the mouth it is full-bodied and balanced by the acidity. It’s quite complex and you will find flavours similar to the ones you found on the nose with an unexpected long aftertaste. The complexity and weight of this wine makes it great with food. It will be very good with salads and white cheeses like goat's cheese. It will also handle white meats like grilled chicken and do well with fried fish.
