As September glides into October the colours change into those so well known Autumn colours, yellow, orange and brown. The trees are a beautiful sight for sure and the colours have inspired the choice of this week's wine. Orange wine in relatively new style here in Norway but has been around for millennia, mostly in countries in the east like Georgia, Armenia and Greece. But as this is not a difficult way to make wine, it is basically to take white wine grapes and leave the grape juice in contact with the skin, the same way you would if you were making red wine. This gives the wine a darker and richer yellow or orange colour and as it gets tannins from the skin more texture is added to the wine. For our wine this week we have gone to the country with the longest and richest tradition for orange wine, Georgia. Tasting notes:Kakheti Co. Rkatsiteli Qvevri 2020 249,90 kr Beautiful deep orange colour in the glass. At first a bit closed on the nose but opened up after a while and grapefruit, orange, apricot and honey came through on the nose. In the mouth the tannins were strong and dominated, but you got a good feel for the orange. I left the bottle in the fridge for two days and tasted again. The nose was pretty much the same, but the tannins had mellowed and the wine was much smoother with flavors ranging from orange and grapefruit to honey and kampfer.
